Finding the right photographer can be a tricky thing. We hope these answers to some common questions help you in deciding if Rebecca is the right one for you.
What is a session like?
My photo shoots are, above all else, relaxed and fun! In the beginning I will get to know your children by asking them questions, and maybe taking some time alone with them so they can see my camera and adjust to me. Most children are much more comfortable with me taking their photograph when no one else is around. Then as they warm up, we will do some family shots and let the games begin! Exploring, rolling down hills, playing games of chase, these are all wonderful ways to bring out the lighter side of your children, and ultimately, help them forget I am even there!
When do you hold your sessions?
Though there are some variations caused by our lovely change of seasons, for the most part I shoot early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Morning light is wonderfully clean and soft, while the hour or two just before sunset is golden and angled. Both are great! I avoid shooting midday, as the sun is harsh overhead and in the summer it’s just HOT! (Newborn sessions can take place at any time, as they are primarily shot indoors.)
Where do you hold your sessions?
We can go wherever you like, or stay right at home! Either way works, but as the weather gets nicer I always try to move at least some of our time outside. I love the outdoors. Not just because I am a nature lover but also because of the room being outside gives us to play. I can shoot in parks, at the beach, at a secluded playground, anywhere we can roam without too many people around. I have seen how children change when we leave the familiarity of their home. The outdoors give us such great opportunities for exploration and discovery, and the energy that comes from getting away from their typical surroundings makes for great photography. Capturing the connections between family members is inevitable when we embark on this kind of shared experience.
How long are your sessions?
The length of your shoot will depend on the the type of session you book, how many people are going to be a part of it, and how old they are. I strive to keep my sessions as fun as possible, and will keep an eye on how my young subjects are feeling throughout the shoot. I do stop for breaks if needed, and because I never want to sour a child towards their photo session experience, I am sure to wrap up as soon as I sense their endurance is waning.
What about the weather?
Indeed, here in New England the weather is always a factor! Because most sessions take place outside there is the possibility that we will have to reschedule our shoot due to rain. If so every effort will be taken to work you into the schedule as close to your original date as possible. Weather cancellations will be made within 48 hours of your shoot. As I am a natural light shooter only, we must be sure we will have enough available light. I do shoot outdoors on overcast days (clouds can actually make for beautiful photographs!), but if your session is to take place inside, there is the chance we will not have enough light on a dark and cloudy day, and therefore we will need to reschedule. If you have any weather concerns as your shoot date approaches please let me know and we can decide together if it is best to pick another day.
What should we wear?
I always tell my clients to wear what they’re comfortable in! Bright colors are great, jeans fantastic! And I love bare feet!! I discourage putting everyone in matching outfits, simply because it tends to distract rather then enhance. I would also avoid stripes, bibbed overall type outfits, and any clothes with logos or phrases on them (we want people to be reading the connections between your family members, not the slogans on their tee shirts!).
